Eat, Pray, Love…

eat-pray-love

I have been a little down in the dumps lately (I love a good idiom in the morning!) as I have been trying to work out my TEFL lifestyle. I have been getting the YouTube channel all sorted and researching video editing programmes. i-to-i have brought back the Thailand Internship and recently it has been looking more appalling than it did before. There have advertised the 2018 dates and I REALLY want to go.

Alas; the italki teaching has not happened yet; as I now work “full time” for my part time job – they have messed my shifts up which has made it impossible to get any classes booked or even taught. To cheer myself up last night; I decided to watch “Eat, Pray, Love” with Julia Roberts in. The film is based on the book by Liz Gilbert (which I have on my TBR list; I need to start this book!)

7d2cb29d866f4fd0f63c8a809f20432a

Some of what was said during the film really struck a cord with me. I have watched this film many times but this time it was different. I am wondering if I am heading towards the same fate as Liz did before she wrote the book.I know that there is only my family keeping me here in the U479402584-6239c2245158220e99e2e2376df524eaK (oh, and the lack of funds to pay for the internships). I have had enough of dreaming about living it. I want to live it for real!

I have been looking at Workaway again and think I should do one here in the UK before I head off to one abroad.

Workaway…

logoHas anyone ever heard of Workaway? I have been working my way through Jackie’s (The Budget Minded Traveller) podcasts and in Episode 5 (from April 2014) she was discussing about Workaway. To be honest, I have never heard of this programme until Jackie mentioned it (You rock Jackie!). It is a volunteering programme; however, there is a joining fee but it is for two years! Which it pretty fab! I would love to do a Workaway. There are so many places where I could volunteer. It is a great relief on the wallet and an amazing idea! I am wondering if it is something I could do when I have finished the internship; in whichever country I apply to!

I have had a good look around the site and for two years as a “Workawayer” will cost me $29.00; which is about £19.30. AMAZING right! I am very tempted to join; anyone interested? I bet Claire and Ant of To Love, To Live have joined up – if not; I recommend that they should!

I know that becoming a “Workawayer” will be an excellent experience to me and will improve me into an even better person!

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award…

What’s the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award and how does it work?

As far as I can tell it is another great way to allow female bloggers to connect, to share a little more about themselves and to reach out and get to know others. To be honest, I did not know that there was this award. I am flattered that I have been selected!

It works by starting with a thank you to the blogger who nominated you. So firstly I would just like to say a huge thank you to Claire *waves* over at To Love To Live for connecting with me. You are fab Claire!.

The next step is for me to answer the questions then coming up with my own 10 questions and choosing up to 10 bloggers to nominate myself. Here are the questions set by Claire:

  1. Why do you travel? What is it that inspires you to keep going?
  2. Recall a travel quote that really clicks with you.
  3. Recommend a film, book or both that has inspired the traveller in you.
  4. What is the most unusual transport method you’ve used to travel?
  5. If you could re-create any of the great pioneering adventures, which one would it be and why?
  6. Thinking back to your schooling, which subject best prepared you for travel and how?
  7. What have you learnt most about yourself since you’ve been travelling?
  8. What has been your most memorable animal encounter so far?
  9. Which travel destination best reflects your outlook as a traveller?
  10. If someone wanted to make the transition from being a tourist to being a traveller, what piece of advice would you give them?

My answers:

Why do you travel? What is it that inspires you to keep going?

Why do I travel? To be honest, I have not done much travelling, but what I have done has been amazing. I love to meet new people, experience new cultures and food and learn the history of where I am visiting. I have found that travel programmes when inspired me. Sue Perkins and Joanna Lumley have recently done some programmes and I want to follow in their footsteps.

Recall a travel quote that really clicks with you.

Twitter78e035fThis quote is from Love TEFL and it is something I believe strongly in.

Recommend a film, book or both that has inspired the traveller in you.

I would have to say Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert for a book and also the film of the same name, starring Julia Roberts (who I must say is one of my favourite actresses). What Liz wrote was amazing and has made me think that I can travel the world on my own and fall in love!

What is the most unusual transport method you’ve used to travel?

Currently I would say that it is the yellow School Bus in the USA. It was not a long journey but I will not forget it as it was very warm and there was no AC. The windows did not open much.

If you could re-create any of the great pioneering adventures, which one would it be and why?

Ooh, what a good question Claire…I would say Columbus’ adventure to find the New World in 1492. I think that walking onto the sands of America would have been very interesting. Seeing the country before all the buildings and vehicles arrived. It would be eye opening.

Thinking back to your schooling, which subject best prepared you for travel and how?

To do not think that my schooling had anything to do with my travel love. Geography was not really “geography”; it was mostly natural topics. I have found that Guiding was the place that taught me to be prepared for travelling. I know how to pack a 70 litre rucksack for three weeks with using only zip lock bags. Meeting people at the International Camps has also taught me many things.

What have you learnt most about yourself since you’ve been travelling?

I have learnt that I am open minded and willing to learn about where and who I am visiting. I know that I can travel light (and heavy) when I can. I know that prefer Trains and Planes when travelling. I know that I HATE suitcases!!!

What has been your most memorable animal encounter so far?

It is pretty sad; as at the time of writing this post I have not had a ‘proper’ animal encounter. Unless you count the Zoo?!

Which travel destination best reflects your outlook as a traveller?

This is a hard question as I do not really know how to answer the question. I have not really travelled far. America to the West and Switzerland to the East are as far I have travelled. I don’t know really…

If someone wanted to make the transition from being a tourist to being a traveller, what piece of advice would you give them?

My advice would be to be willing to understand everything. Be open minded and do not re-judge! Have fun and enjoy it!

TEFL Things that are making me smile…

Over the last few weeks; I have been collecting images, posters and articles that I can use for my TEFL adventures. I thought that I would share them with you all:

Stop Taking my Pencils!

I think that this is a fabulous idea! Just would I get away with it?! I wonder how they feel when the students are using them… I have also said “swap for a pencil”; but the current place I am working in frown upon asking a student for the show for a pencil. I have found that it has worked; but only if all the teachers use the system!

The Ardent Teacher

I don’t know about you, but no matter what I have tried in the past, my pencils always seem to disappear! I have a special holder on my desk for ‘student pencils.’ I have previously asked them to leave a shoe in exchange for a pencil. I thought that if my students would hobble around my classroom with only one shoe, they would surely remember to give me my pencil back. But, sure enough, my pencils would slowly disappear! So, I recently came up with a new idea for keeping my pencils from getting “kidnapped” (napped by kids) and thought I would share it with you!

2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog. Pretty clever right?! I thought that I would share it with you all as my first post of 2015

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 3,700 times in 2014. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 3 trips to carry that many people.

Ailsa’s Travel Theme: Meeting Places

This week’s Travel theme from Ailsa’s blog – Where’s My Backpack? is Meeting Places and I thought that this would be an excellent time to get back into my “everyday blogging” again; I know that Ailsa does her weekly themed feature as a “meeting place” for all us travel buffs, TEFL teachers and ExPats to relive and remember our traveling times.

Here my post about this week’s Travel Theme; I wonder if you will recognise these “meeting places”?! Some of the images I HAVE NOT taken myself and I have captioned them with where I found them…enjoy everyone! At these places I have met the best people in the world…

From Landscape Institute

Bury Mount, a scheduled ancient monument, has been at the heart of the market town of Towcester since the 11th century. It was originally constructed as a medieval motte and has subsequently been used as a civil war gun emplacement, a 19th century prospect mound and market garden

From Blog Preston

Parks are plentiful in Preston.  Even though the city is known for its historic buildings, nightlife and shopping areas, there are also many beautiful areas of greenery, where residents and visitors can escape from busy city life.

The most well-known parks in Preston are Avenham Park and its partner Miller Park.  They lie side by side on the north bank of the River Ribble, immediately south of Preston City Centre.  These parks were created by the landscape architect Edwards Milner during the 1860’s, during the American Civil war, in order to keep cotton workers employed and to prevent the problems associated with unemployment.

Super Excited!!

I have just been talking to a lovely lady (waves at Rebecca)  at i-to-i about the Internship to China next year. I am SO glad that the deposit system is now in full force. I can now achieve my dream and teach abroad. I can now afford to go! Yippie!

On the current money I am paid on; I could pay for it in TWO instalments! Fantastic right?

I need to talk to my family and then make the payment really. I know that it is only five months but it is a chance of a lifetime.

I am really excited now…all I need is to book it all!
