Wordle Wednesday: Tricky Words

As some of you may know, I have been working with a Reception (aged 4 and 5) aged child since September (it does seem a little longer though!) and we have been working through Jolly Phonics; which I so need to get some training as it is very interesting. I know that many people teach younger students and do not know what to do with them; this is why I chose this week’s Wordle to be on the theme of Tricky Words.

Idiom of the Week: “By the skin of one’s teeth”

This week’s idiom of the week; is how I am currently feeling. That I am getting through my life by the skin of my teeth. This is why I chose to have it as the theme for this week.

by the skin of one’s teeth

Fig. just barely. (By an amount equal to the thickness of the (imaginary) skin on one’s teeth.) I got through calculus class by the skin of my teeth. I got to the airport a few minutes late and missed the plane by the skin of my teeth. Lloyd escaped from the burning building by the skin of his teeth.
if you do something by the skin of your teeth, you only just succeed in doing it We escaped by the skin of our teeth. England held on by the skin of their teeth to win 1-0.

Super excited – there are more courses!!!

After the completed my Teaching English Online course; i-to-i have brought out another three courses – Teaching in Vietnam, Teaching in Poland and Teaching in Italy. Each of the courses are only 5 hours and £11.00 each! Fantastic is all I can say. I have never thought about teaching in Italy. I really need to add these courses to my TEFL repertoire – I believe that the more I have learn the more I can give. Do you all agree?

This weekend I am attending a TEFL Recruitment event in London that has been organised by TEFL.org.uk. I very excited about going. I have printed off copies of my up to date CV ready to give off to any potential recruiters and I have got all my lunch ready and sorted. I am going to be going down by train. It is not far from my house to London. It will be the first time I have ever attended this type of event. I will keep you all posted. I am looking forward to it; I am wondering what is going to happen there. I am ready whatever will happy. I am positive!

Wordle Wednesday: Chinese Calender

It is will soon be the Chinese New Year; which is the 19th February and it will be the Year of the Goat. I am from the Year of the Pig (now you all know how old I am?!) So, I thought that it would be a good time to do a Wordle Wednesday all about the Chinese calender. I know that there are only twelve of them but it will still make a pretty cloud. Just see below…

Which year are you?

Idiom of the Week: “An Eager Beaver”

I was such this idiom this week; as I am all finished with my Specialist Modules. Just the Advanced Grammar module to do; bring on pay day!!

Anyway; back to this week’s idiom of the week which is an eager beaver. This is one of my all time favourites when it comes to idioms. It always brings a smile to my face.

Meaning:

someone who works very hard and is very eager to do things

The usage of the word ‘beaver’ is because a beaver is a small animal which people traditionally believe to be hard-working.

Examples:

“Who’s the eager beaver who came in at the weekend finish this work off?”

“The eager beavers of industry seldom reach their potential, much less rise to the top”

“New volunteers are always eager beavers.”

“The young assistant gets work very early. She’s real eager beaver.”

Wordle Wednesday: Emotions

The first Wordle Wednesday of 2015; how exciting! Celebrations have all finished and hopefully we all had a good time. There were possibley a lot of emotions going around and that is the theme of this week’s word cloud. Emotions! I bet that we have all experienced most of these emotions sometime in our lives. Which one is your favourite?

Qualification Update!

I do not know if I am supposed to tell you all this; but I recently asked by a member of staff at i-to-i TEFL to be a ‘tester’ for the new Teaching English Online course ; well today I had the confirmation that I have completed it and I have passed the module. However; I do not know how many hours it is so I will need to contact her and ask her. Also, I completed the Teaching Business English module just before Christmas. I am still working on the Teaching in South Korea module and I need to pay for the Advanced Grammar module. However; I am currently on my second attempt at the final part of the Korean module. I am finding it rather hard to write the answers to the questions that have been set for me. Has anyone else done this module and found this? I really want to complete this module, so I can move on to the Advance Grammar module.

From the Teaching English Online module; I have found that I can teach with an online school or ‘go out on my own’ and then can gain the teaching experience that is needed by most Companies I have bee researching about. I am a little worried about if I did start off on my own; I know that I would not get all the support and back up from an online school. There was a resource list; which I am going to share with you all:

Online Language learning communities

Verbling – https://www.verbling.com/

iTalki – http://www.italki.com/

Verbal Planet – http://www.verbalplanet.com/tutorhome.asp

Palabea – http://www.palabea.com/

I have never heard of these online comunities; I am thinking about joining them to gain some experience and possibly an income from them.

Online Schools

Open English – http://www.openenglish.com/en/careers/

Myngle – http://www.myngle.com/

Berlitz – http://www.berlitz-virtual-classroom.eu/en/employment/apply_online.html

91waijiao – http://www.91waijiao.com/teacher_advertise/about

Tutor Group – http://recruit.tutorabc.com/program/index.asp

kukuspeak – http://www.kukuspeak.com/online-esl-jobs/

English Town EF – http://www.englishtown.com/en-ie/

Ironically; I have heard of two of these online schools (Berlitz and English Town); many years ago I took a Berlitz course but it was a cassette tape (yes it was that long ago) course. I did not do much of it; I borrowed it from the local library. A former work colleague use to work from English Town but as a classroom teacher; knowing him he also did online classes too! He was one of the IT teachers here.

Idiom of the Week: “Burn the Midnight Oil”

Hello and welcome to the first Idiom of the Week of 2015! I am so glad to get back into the routine of posting these little features here at My TEFL Adventures – it is becoming a wonderful habit. I am currently blogging about ‘habit’ on my personal blog – The Writing Rants… – I am taking part in the NaBloPoMo writing event. However; that has nothing to do with this week’s idiom…I have also been doing some crafting and I have been working a little late into the night.

This week’s idiom is about how people burn the midnight oil.

Picture from kittehkatbar at Deviantart

The meaning is “to stay up working, especially studying, late at night”

Examples:

I have a big exam tomorrow so I’ll be burning the midnight oil tonight.

If you burn the midnight oil night after night, you’ll probably become ill.

History: Many people would have been working by the light of an oil lamp late in the night; as there would have not been any electricity like our lucky selves today.

Welcome to 2015…

I have been back at work for four days and it feels like I have been back four weeks! I am still down in the dumps about not accepting the job in Poland. I know that I have the finances to get myself over there and I can gain extra money when I am there; as Forever Living is available in Poland.

Work has been busy, so I have not been able to plan or post anything – I have not even been able to job search or contact IC Bilbao. That is my job for the weekend!

Idiom of the Week and Wordle Wednesday will start next week; is there anything else you think I should add to the site? I would love your feedback about these features or even about the entire blog. 2015 is a new year and I believe it is my year…do you agree?

2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog. Pretty clever right?! I thought that I would share it with you all as my first post of 2015

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 3,700 times in 2014. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 3 trips to carry that many people.
